Terms of Use & Privacy Policy
Terms of Use
1. Acceptance of terms
By creating an account on ASHE, you agree to these terms. ASHE is operated by TODO: legal entity name — blocked on entity formation.
2. Accounts
You must be a current student, faculty member, or staff member at an accredited college or
university, verified by an institutional .edu email address, to create an
account. You're responsible for your account and for what you upload under it.
3. Content you upload
You retain all ownership rights in the content you upload. By uploading content to ASHE, you grant ASHE a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable license to host, store, reproduce, and display that content to other members for the purpose of operating the service.
By uploading, you represent that this is your own original work or that you otherwise have the right to share it, and that it does not infringe anyone else's copyright.
You may not upload material that reproduces, in whole or substantial part, someone else's copyrighted work — a professor's slides, a textbook, or another student's notes — without their permission. Notes written in your own words, based on a lecture or reading, are permitted.
4. Prohibited content
See Guidelines for what's allowed. At minimum: no exams at this stage of launch. Past exams/tests may be allowed in the future, but only once redaction, the copyright representation above, and an academic-integrity attestation are all in place — see Guidelines for the full policy. This feature is not yet enabled.
5. Termination
ASHE removes content that violates these terms or the Guidelines on notice, including in response to copyright claims from the original rights holder. ASHE may suspend or terminate an account, with or without notice, for repeated or clear violations — uploading someone else's copyrighted material, uploading a live/in-use exam — or for violation of applicable law.
6. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. Continued use of ASHE after a change constitutes acceptance. Material changes will be announced on the site.
7. Governing law
TODO: governing law / jurisdiction — blocked on entity formation
Privacy Policy
1. What we collect
Based on the current signup and upload forms:
- At signup: full name, school (
.edu) email, birthday, university/college name, password. - At upload: course, title, material type, the uploaded file, and description. Professor is also collected but is for internal logging and your own reference only — it is not shown publicly to other users.
2. How we use it
To run ASHE — showing your uploaded materials (except the Professor field, which stays private to you) to other members of the ASHE community, and letting you manage what you've uploaded. TODO: any additional uses (e.g. analytics — see WEBSITE-BRAINSTORM.md topic 6)
3. Who can see it
Your name, uploaded materials (course, title, material type, file, description), and profile information are visible to other verified ASHE members once you're signed in. The Professor field you enter at upload is private — visible only to you, never shown to other members. TODO: confirm whether visibility should be scoped to same-school members only, vs. all verified .edu members ASHE-wide
4. Data retention
We retain your account and uploaded content until you delete it or close your account. On account deletion, we remove your personal information within TODO: retention period, e.g. 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
5. Contact
Privacy questions: TODO: contact email
